1. Origins

Some of the well-known places that produce red diamonds are Africa, Australia, Brazil, and India. Several famous red diamonds have been produced in western Australia in the Argyle mine.

The largest known diamond to date is the Moussaieff Red diamond weighing 5.11 carats and worth a whopping $20 million!

2. How does it get its color?

Unlike other diamonds, red diamonds don’t gain their color from possessing impurities like Nitrogen in it. The cause of the color is still being debated among many experts.

Some of the theories propose that the red shade is due to the change in atomic structure on the journey of the diamond to the surface of the earth where the pressure has impacted its molecular structure. Similar to the appearance of a pink hue on the pink diamond the red hue might have been an even greater pressure placed on the diamond.

3. Intensity levels

The red diamond doesn’t have a varying level of color intensity rather it is thought of as a supersaturated level of the pink diamond.

The presence of secondary hues however does offer a slight change in the color- like a beautiful purplish red color diamond.

4. Diamond price

The rarity of this diamond fixes the price of these diamonds as higher than the other fancy colored diamonds where almost $1 million is offered for each carat.

This applies to pure red diamonds, however, the diamond price is lesser for ones with secondary hues present in them such as orange and brown. This however doesn’t completely diminish the beauty of this diamond but adds a secondary charming characteristic to it.
