Ruby - Birthstone of the month. Its History, Color range, and Value.



One of the rarest gemstones, it is a blessing not only to behold but also the historical meaning it signifies. The month of July's Birthstone as well as a popular 15th and 40th-anniversary gift. Some popular rubies such as “Black Prince’s Ruby” are seen in the British Imperial state crown.

History of the Ruby


Found in ancient India it was also called the “king's precious stones”. Used before in jewelry it was a symbol of power and energy. Some sources of these rich stones are found all over the world across different timelines. First found in Myanmar and then later found in the late 20th century in Vietnam. Other producers of this birthstone include Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Mozambique, etc.


Fact: A long time ago in India, possessing rubies was believed to bestow peace with people’s enemies and was often placed on the heart side of the body to allow peaceful living.




The earring is designed from 11.57 carats of White Diamonds and 14.34 carats of Mozambique Pigeon Blood Rubies in 18k white gold.



Treating the stone


To give it a clean and finishing glow we love to see in our jewelry the rubies are often heat treated to remove the purplish coloration giving rise to a vibrant red. This treatment technique is more stable to perform however an alternative process of lattice diffusion and dyeing can be used. Below is a picture of an untreated ruby.

How does it get its color?


Due to the trace presence of the element chromium, it gives the ruby red color. This can range from a deep rich red to a lighter rose shade of red. The most precious ruby color is “pigeon-blood red” which depends on the amount of chromium present in it.





Ruby’s Value


Rubies can also be assessed in a similar fashion to diamonds- using the 4C’s. Color is the most important factor in this case. The darker the color the more precious and higher valued it is. Clarity of the stones is also a determining factor where the purer tone of the stone without any secondary pinkish-purple hues move valuable.
