It is used when the monarch is crowned during the coronation ceremony and is an important symbol of power and authority being passed from one monarch to another.

It consists of four crosses- pattée, four fleurs-de-lis that form the base of the crown, and arches that intersect. Originally when in Charles II's possession the crown didn’t have a lot of jewels eventually stones were fitted into the crown and currently, it is set with over 400 stones.

The stones include amethysts, aquamarines, garnets, peridots, rubies, sapphires, spinels, tourmalines, topazes, and zircons.
